In Hong Kong at least, you get OAPs who buy E63 AMGs purely because it’s the most expensive E-Class because “more is better”, drive it around at town speeds whilst wearing lace gloves to prevent hand tan and then complain that they spend a lot of money on petrol every week. Love, you bought a car with a 5.5l V8 with two turbos, what did you expect?

I often wonder what I would do in a similar situation. Of course the idea of a BMW M5 is attractive - I’d love to walk out and see that badge on the back and relish being one of the few who know what it means. I remember seeing the SHO logo on my ‘97 and smiling. But now, if I needed to buy a car, would an M5 really be practical? Would I take it to a track and have fun with it, or would I just drive it like it was a 535, or a 3 series diesel? Similarly AMG - should I just get the appearance package and be done with it? Order up the S package on a Boxster or a Targa (my 2 preferred Porsches) - would it make my life better or would the stiffer ride make me miserable?

Few things irritate me more than seeing an E63 or an M6/M5 around here going like 10 under the speed limit.
I mean, fuck. I actually blitzed by someone in a Maserati Granturismo last year because they were going like 10 or more under the limit. I followed them for a little bit, hoping they’d unleash that sweet, sweet exhaust note. But after a few minutes of being stuck behind a college student who must have been taught how to drive by their grandmother, I just passed the fool.

The tanning thing amazes me about Chinese culture.

Wait, that’s a thing? And you knew about it, too?

That is most definitely a thing.

They didn’t want to hurt their bosses car.

They’re still stuck in the European middle-ages where they think tan and skinny is a sign of being poor and working, and rich people are snow white and fat.

...so I should go to Hong Kong then. I'd be the wealthiest looking bastard around.

Yep. Facekinis. Ugh.

There were quite a few Chinese international students at my university whose car purchases were clearly driven by “most expensive.”

Totally. Then you can go down to the beach and get all the... babes....

Hawt. Except the one all the way to the right...that's legitimately terrifying.

Me too, I also see the big see through visor things here in California.

Nowadays in Asian culture, it’s mainly being white that’s appealing - the fat fad has declined since.

The thing is, you know that your car is special because of that AMG/M-badge. These people just buy it because it’s the most expensive.

Not surprising, their parents’ money tend to come from less reputable sources...

I don’t doubt it.

That’s silly. Some dealer (and I’m not suggesting this, no, not me) could tart a standard V8 E Class up and say: “Oh yeah, sure, it’s got that big twin-turbo V8!” The people you describe would never even open the hood to check.

I live in a country where cars are really expensive, I remember living in Guayaquil that the number of cayennes and Range Rover was absurd, the RR sport goes for $160,000 and up, the regular is well over $200,000, and you see them around everywhere, just because it’s the most expensive thing you can get..

Buying cars in Hong Kong is expensive too, it’s a place where Audi TTs can go for $72,000.

There are many Hong Kong/Mainland Chinese transplants in San Francisco who drive Mercedes AMG cars just because it’s expensive.
